Battle of Neerwinden
March 18, 1793
After executing King Louis XVI, the French revolutionary government ordered General Dumouriez to lead the Army of the North into Belgium and Holland. At Neerwinden the French faced off against an Austrian army commanded by Prince Josias of Coburg. With nearly equal numbers of troops, the barely trained French volunteers were no match for the Austrian regulars and were repulsed. After the loss, Dumouriez feared losing his head to the guillotine and defected.
